Often, wellness programs focus on diet and exercise and seek to address cardiovascular risks. Research suggests that continued job stress can increase those risks even for otherwise healthy workers…

There are two lessons to learn from this research. First, we each have our own stress “signature.” Stress can show up as physical symptoms, mental troubles, problems in relationships, and mood or energy concerns. Second, to maximize our wellness efforts, it helps to have other supports and resources — both internally and in the work environment. This includes things like work-family balance, being present and engaged at work, a sense of accountability, positive teamwork, and a willingness to access help from others (like counselors, coaches, and advisors) when we need it. The key is to use resources in a simple, step-by-step process and, with each step, manage stress and improve well-being.
